Sector Conference: August 13-14, 2027, in Chicago, IL
The Nominating Conference of The NewsGuild-CWA will be held at 12 p.m. ET / 9 a.m. PT on Saturday, January 9, 2027. This is a virtual conference that will be conducted on Zoom. An in-person Sector Conference will be conducted August 13-14, 2027, in Chicago, IL immediately preceding the 2027 CWA Convention, (August 16-18).
Article VII.2(a) of The NewsGuild-CWA Constitution establishes the time by which a local must be in good standing in order to have voice and vote at Guild governing conferences. For the Nominating Conference, locals must have paid per capita dues for the months up to and including October 2026, (due by November 15, 2026). For the 2027 Sector Conference, per capita dues must be paid through the month of May 2027, (due by June 15, 2027).
The number of delegates to which each local is entitled is determined by the average number of per capitas paid by the local in the averaging period described in Article VII.2(c) of the Guild Constitution. For the Nominating Conference, that period is September 2025 through August 2026. For the 2027 Sector Conference, the averaging period is April 2026 through March 2027.
Article X.6 of the Guild Constitution requires that delegates and alternates to both Conferences be elected by secret ballot. Locals may opt to elect delegates for each conference jointly or conduct separate elections. (Locals are reminded that delegates to the CWA Convention must also be elected by secret ballot. The formula CWA uses for allotting convention delegates differs from the Guild formula and yields fewer delegates.)
Nominating Conference: January 9, 2027
Guild delegates attending the 2022 Sector Conference voted to establish a Nominating Conference for the purpose of conducting nominations for NewsGuild officers. Delegates also authorized convening by video conference. This will be the union’s second virtual Nominating Conference.
Nominations will be taken to elect the following NewsGuild officers:
Sector Chairperson
President
Executive Vice President
6 Regional Vice Presidents
Article IX.2(d) of the Guild Constitution defines the specific geographic area included in each of the six electoral regions, but roughly, they are:
Region 1 – New England, parts of New York and Pennsylvania
Region 2 – Southern states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia
Region 3 – Michigan and parts of Indiana, New York and Pennsylvania
Region 4 – Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Montana
Region 5 – Greater New York City area and parts of Connecticut
Region 6 – Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Wisconsin and parts of Indiana
Only delegates elected from locals within each respective region may nominate candidates to represent that region, except that delegates of News Media Guild are deemed delegates of the region where their bureaus are located.
The membership of CWA Canada elects the President of CWA Canada in proceedings that are separate from this Nominating Conference. The President of CWA Canada is a member of The NewsGuild Executive Council.
Pursuant to Article IX.3(b) of the Guild Constitution, if more than two candidates are nominated to any of these offices, the delegates to the Nominating Conference will vote by a roll-call for the purpose of reducing the nominees to two per office. The candidate receiving the least number of votes in the first ballot will be eliminated and balloting will continue until only two candidates remain; these two will be declared the nominees of the Nominating Conference.
Any candidate unopposed at the Nominating Conference shall be declared elected.
Contested elections are resolved by a secret ballot election conducted by The NewsGuild-CWA and supervised by the Sector Election and Referendum Committee.
All nominees must declare in writing their willingness to serve prior to the close of the Nominating Conference.
The positions of President, Executive Vice President and President of CWA Canada are full-time positions, all other positions are volunteer. The term of office is 4 years, beginning August 16, 2027, the first day of the CWA Convention.
Locals are required to register delegates and alternates in advance using the Sector Conference Online Registration system. Additional information on the registration period and processes will follow.
Because this will be a virtual conference, there is no registration fee for delegates and alternates.
Sector Conference: August 13-14, 2027
The 2027 Sector Conference of The NewsGuild-CWA will be held August 13-14, 2027, in Chicago, IL. This is the Friday and Saturday before the CWA Convention convenes on Monday, August 16. (CWA is expected to conduct delegate registration and workshops on Sunday, August 15.)
A registration fee of $125 per delegate and alternate to the Guild Sector Conference will help defray the costs of the meeting. The cost is unchanged since the last conference.
