Staff at the Alliance for Youth Action ratify first contract with unanimous support

Unionized staff at the Alliance for Youth Action have proudly ratified a first contract with 100% of members voting yes.

After winning voluntary recognition in 2023, workers spent two years at the bargaining table securing critical workplace protections, including just cause and progressive discipline, and building a strong foundation for the future. Their first contract delivers real gains in pay, job security and dignity in the workplace.

Contract Highlights:

  • Guaranteed 4% wage increases every January 1 for the life of the contract, plus a $1,750 ratification bonus
  • Minimum salaries established for covered positions
  • Just cause protections with progressive discipline, including warnings and suspension before discharge
  • Union security language requiring Guild membership as a condition of employment where permitted by law
  • Anti-bullying and non-discrimination protections, along with safeguards against workplace and online surveillance
  • Improved layoff protections, including up to four months of severance
  • Strong benefits package, including generous vacation, sick leave, fully paid short-term disability and retirement contributions

The Alliance for Youth Action staff are organized with the Washington-Baltimore NewsGuild (TNG-CWA Local 32025).
