LINCOLN, NE – Today, workers of Nebraska Appleseed publicly announced their intent to unionize. Nebraska Appleseed, founded in 1996, is a nonprofit advocacy organization dedicated to fighting for justice and opportunity for all Nebraskans. The group tackles systemic issues like child welfare, immigration, health care, and poverty—working in the courts, at the Capitol, and in communities to create lasting change.
See the below statement from Appleseed Workers United:
“We are excited to announce that a supermajority of the non-managerial staff at Nebraska Appleseed have signed representation cards authorizing the Communications Workers of America – Denver Newspaper Guild to serve as our collective bargaining representative.
Appleseed Workers United is committed to advancing and protecting the interests of Nebraska Appleseed employees. Our mission is to advance justice for employees at all levels of the organization through improved collaboration, shared leadership, and transparency. We believe in the mission and work of Nebraska Appleseed and seek to strengthen that mission by modeling a workplace that is democratic, equitable, and anti-racist. In particular, we are committed to co-creating a workplace that respects lived experience, and reflects the community-centric organizing and advocacy we strive to uplift in our work.”
Appleseed Workers United requested in a letter delivered to management today that Nebraska Appleseed voluntarily recognize their union. This would avoid the need for an election to be held through the National Labor Relations Board, and allow the parties to quickly begin negotiations for a first contract.
You can support the workers by signing their petition and following them on social media.
