WASHINGTON — Members of the Science News Media Guild, workers who publish Science News and Science News Explores will conduct a 24-hour strike on Wednesday, November 5th. This comes after SNMG members voted to reject the Society’s latest contract proposal.

“We’ve been at the negotiations table for more than a year and a half and have been clear about the support our workers need to be able to continue doing our jobs well. Over and over, Society management has demonstrated that they are not hearing us and do not value our concerns,” says Jill Sakai, managing editor for Science News Explores.

Pay equity and flexibility around in-office work remain the top concerns of the membership, with the latest proposal falling short in these regards.

“I can only imagine how much our work would have benefitted if the Society had supported us these last 558 days instead of fighting against our needs,” says Nikk Ogasa, a staff writer for Science News.

Members of SNMG previously voted by 92% to authorize a strike against the Society for Science if necessary. The union hopes that the Society returns to the table so an offer can be reached that reflects the talent and commitment of the workers.

The picket line will be from 8:00am-8:00pm at 1776 Massachusetts Ave NW.
