Since 1933 The NewsGuild-CWA has fought for press freedom, growing into the largest union of journalists and media workers in North America. In the last several years the attacks on a free press in North America have increased.
In early 2025 the Trump administration started blocking journalists from attending White House events, the administration moved to gut Radio Free Asia, Voice of America and other international broadcasts. And in July the Trump administration got Congress to pass a rescission bill to strip funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which supports hundreds of NPR and PBS stations across the United States.
